ACT Therapy

Stop fighting with your own mind.

So much energy can go into pushing away the thoughts and feelings you do not want, and somehow they only seem to dig in deeper. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy offers a different way. Instead of fighting your inner world, you learn to make room for it, so it stops running the show, and you get to move toward the things that actually matter to you. Our therapists offer ACT in San Jose, Santa Clara, Fremont, Oakland, and Morgan Hill, and through telehealth across California.

This approach might be a fit if

A lot of us are taught that the goal is to get rid of difficult feelings, to think positive and push the hard stuff down. ACT takes a gentler and more honest view. Painful thoughts and feelings are part of being human, and the more we struggle against them, the more they tend to take over. The work is learning to hold them differently, so they take up less room and you have more freedom to live.

Z

You feel stuck in your own head, caught in worry, rumination, or self-criticism

Z

You have tried to think your way out of hard feelings and it has not worked

Z

Anxiety or low mood keeps pulling you away from the things you care about

Z

You sense there is a life you want to be living, and you want help moving toward it

You do not have to feel ready or unafraid to begin. You just have to be willing to take the first small step.

How ACT therapy can help

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy rests on a freeing idea: you do not have to feel better before you can live better. Rather than waiting for the hard thoughts and feelings to disappear, ACT helps you change your relationship with them, so they lose their grip, and then it helps you take real action toward the life you want. It is practical, present-focused, and deeply human.

Your therapist helps you notice when you are caught up in your thoughts and gently step back from them, make room for difficult emotions instead of battling them, and get clear on what truly matters to you. From there, the work is about taking committed steps in that direction. Our therapists are trained across a range of approaches, including CBT, somatic therapy, mindfulness based methods, and EMDR for trauma-linked experiences, and many blend ACT with these in a way that fits you rather than handing you a fixed protocol.

Common questions about adult therapy

What does ACT therapy actually look like?
Sessions blend real conversation with practical exercises that help you step back from difficult thoughts, make room for hard feelings, and get clear on what matters to you. Your therapist tailors it to your goals. People across San Jose, Santa Clara, and the Bay Area come to ACT for exactly this kind of practical, values-driven work.
How is ACT different from CBT?
They share roots, but the emphasis differs. CBT often works on changing the content of unhelpful thoughts, while ACT focuses on changing your relationship to them, so they carry less weight, and on moving toward your values. Many of our therapists draw on both, depending on what helps you most.
How long does ACT therapy take?
It depends on what you are working through. Some people come for a focused stretch around a specific goal, others stay longer. Your therapist will talk openly with you about what makes sense for your situation.
Do you accept insurance?
We accept Cigna and Aetna, and we are glad to talk through your options during a free consultation. Our offices in San Jose, Santa Clara, Fremont, Oakland, and Morgan Hill all offer ACT, as does our telehealth across California.
Can I do ACT therapy online?
Yes. ACT translates well to telehealth, and because so much of it is about using new skills in daily life, working from home can make that practice feel even more natural. We offer online sessions throughout California.
What if I tried therapy before and it did not help?
That is common, and it often comes down to fit or approach. ACT offers a different angle from talk therapy alone, and a different method or therapist can make a real difference. We would be glad to hear what did not work before and what you are hoping for now.
