Child therapy

When your child is struggling, you don’t have to figure it out alone

Watching your child have a hard time and not knowing how to help can feel heavy and lonely. Children do not always have the words for what they are feeling, so it can come out in tears, behavior, or withdrawal instead. At Therapy for Every Body, our child therapists offer warm, age-appropriate support in San Jose, Santa Clara, Fremont, Oakland, and Morgan Hill, and through telehealth across California.

Child therapy

Does any of this sound familiar?

Children show distress through their bodies and behaviors far more than through words. What looks like acting out, clinginess, or shutting down is often a young child doing their best to handle something they cannot yet name. As a parent, you may sense something is off well before you can explain it.

Z

Big feelings come out as meltdowns, anger, or tears that feel bigger than the moment.

Z

Your child seems anxious, worried, or afraid in ways that get in the way of daily life.

Z

Sleeping, eating, or other routines have shifted and you are not sure why.

Z

There’s been a change at home: a move, a divorce, a new sibling, a loss, and you can tell it has shaken them.

Z

They have pulled back from things or people they used to enjoy.

Z

Something happened that you can tell is sitting with them, and you want to help them through it.

You know your child best, and trusting that instinct that something needs care is exactly the right move. You do not have to have the answers. That is what we are here for.

How child therapy can help

Children are still building the tools to understand and manage their inner world, so therapy for kids looks different from therapy for adults. It meets them where they are, often through play, art, stories, and movement, which is how young children naturally process and communicate. Seeking support early is not a sign that anything has gone wrong in your parenting. It is one of the most caring things a family can do.

Our child therapists draw on approaches with strong evidence behind them and adapt them to a child’s age and temperament. That can include somatic and body-based methods to help kids settle their nervous systems, mindfulness practices made playful and concrete, child-friendly cognitive behavioral techniques to work with worries and big feelings, and other therapy adapted for children when something distressing needs gentle processing. We also bring parents in as partners, because you are central to your child’s growth.

“We did the consultation online first, and it took the pressure off. Our son seems really comfortable with his therapist.”

Child therapy in person near you and online

In-person and online sessions are both real ways to support your child, not lesser versions of each other. Some children settle best in a play-equipped office, others do well from the comfort of home. We help you figure out what fits.

Online therapy works for adults anywhere in California. For many people, starting from home lowers the barrier. There is no commute after a long day, no waiting room, just a private hour that fits into the life you are already living.

Common questions about child therapy

How do I know if my child needs therapy?

Trust what you are noticing. If your child seems persistently anxious, sad, angry, or withdrawn, if their behavior or routines have shifted, or if something hard has happened, it is worth a conversation. Many families in San Jose, Santa Clara and our other offices reach out simply because their gut tells them their child could use extra support, and that is reason enough.

What does child therapy actually look like?

For young children it often looks like play, art, and stories rather than sitting and talking, because that is how kids naturally express themselves. Your therapist may use child-friendly CBT, calming somatic and mindfulness activities, or adapted trauma therapy techniques.

Will I be included, or is it just my child and the therapist?

You are a partner in the work. Depending on your child’s age and what they are working on, the therapist will check in with you, share guidance for home, and help you support your child between sessions, while still protecting the trust your child builds in the room. Because of state labor laws, we do need to charge for time spent with parents.

Do you accept insurance?

We accept several insurance plans and can walk you through coverage and options during your free intake consultation, so the cost is clear before you start. You can also reach out to the office any time with questions.

Can my child do therapy online?

Many children do well with telehealth, which we offer throughout California. For some kids, being at home helps them feel safe enough to engage. Most kids under 10 do better with in person sessions, but your kid might be the exception. We will help you decide whether in person or online is the better starting point.

What if my child does not want to go?

That is common, and it is okay. Our therapists are skilled at building trust slowly and making sessions feel safe rather than scary. Often the consultation and first visit are about lowering the pressure, and many children warm up once they realize this is a place to play and be understood.

Your child can feel better, and so can you

When your child is struggling, it can be hard to picture things feeling lighter for either of you. You do not have to take that on faith. The first step is just a conversation about what your child needs, and you can decide everything else from there.

We’re here when you’re ready.
