Couples Therapy
Need help finding your way back to each other?
Every relationship hits stretches where the distance feels wider than you want it to, where the same argument keeps circling, or where you love each other and still can’t seem to connect. Couples therapy is a place to slow down and understand what’s really happening between you, with someone in the room who isn’t taking sides. Our therapists work with couples in person in San Jose, Santa Clara, Fremont, Oakland, and Morgan Hill, and online throughout California.
Does any of this sound familiar?
Couples come to therapy at all kinds of moments. Some are in real pain and worried about whether they’ll make it. Others are basically solid and want to stop having the same fight, or reconnect after years of running on autopilot. Wherever you are, you don’t have to be in crisis to deserve support. These experiences are common:
The same argument keeps coming back, no matter how hard you try
One or both of you has started to shut down, or keep the peace by going quiet
Conversations turn into criticism, defensiveness, or distance faster than you mean them to
You feel more like roommates or co-parents than partners
Trust has been shaken by an affair, a betrayal, or a slow erosion you can’t quite name
Big transitions: a new baby, a move, illness, or blending families have pulled you off balance
You still love each other, and you’re not sure how to find your way back
You need help bringing pleasure, connection, and intimacy back into your relationship
Reaching out together, or even just one of you starting the conversation, takes courage. It’s a sign you’re not done.
How couples therapy can help
Struggling in a relationship doesn’t mean you’ve failed or that you chose the wrong person. Most couples were never taught how to handle conflict, repair after a rupture, or stay close through stress. Couples therapy gives you a place to learn those things together, with a therapist who helps you understand the pattern you keep falling into and what each of you needs underneath it.
Our therapists tailor the work to your actual relationship. For many couples that draws on the Gottman Method, a research based approach to communication, conflict, and friendship that you can read more about on our [Gottman therapy page]. For others, the heart of the work is Emotionally Focused Therapy, which helps couples understand the emotional bond underneath their conflicts and is explained in more depth on our [EFT page]. Depending on what you bring, the work may also weave in somatic approaches for the stress your bodies hold, mindfulness based methods for staying present in hard moments, and support like CBT or solution focused approaches to get to the heart of change.

What some clients say
“We came in stuck in the same fight we’d been having for years. We didn’t walk out perfect, but we finally understood what was actually happening underneath it, and that changed how we talk to each other.”
“After the affair, I wasn’t sure we’d survive. Having someone help us through the repair, without rushing us or telling us what to do, was the only reason we made it to the other side.”
“Doing sessions online meant we could actually keep going even with two kids and opposite schedules. We’d put them to bed and log on. It worked better than we expected.”

Common questions about couples therapy
Do we have to be in crisis to start couples therapy?
Not at all. Plenty of couples come to us in a generally good place and just want to stop having the same fight, reconnect, or get ahead of a big transition. You don’t have to wait until things are falling apart. Our therapist in San Jose, Santa Clara and throughout the bay area work with couples across the whole spectrum, from tune-up to repair.
What's the difference between Gottman and EFT?
Both are well researched and effective, and they overlap more than they compete. The Gottman Method leans toward practical skills for communication, conflict, and friendship, while EFT focuses on the emotional bond underneath your conflicts. You don’t have to choose ahead of time. Your therapist will draw on tools that fit your relationship, and you can read more on our Gottman and EFT pages.
What if my partner doesn't want to come?
Sometimes that happens, and it doesn’t mean you’re out of options. Sometimes one partner starts in individual therapy to work on their side of the dynamic. Sometimes meeting with the therapist once or twice makes the hesitant partner feel more comfortable. A free consultation is a good place to talk through where things stand.
What does a couples session actually look like?
Usually the therapist helps you slow down the conversations that tend to go sideways at home. You’ll start to see the patterns you fall into, understand what’s driving them, and practice new ways of talking and repairing. It’s active and collaborative, not just venting across the couch.
Can we do couples therapy online?
Yes. We offer telehealth throughout California, and many couples find it’s what makes therapy fit their lives, especially with kids, work, or distance in the mix. The work translates well to video, and you can even join from two locations when you need to.
Do you work with LGBTQ+ and non-traditional relationships?
Absolutely. Our therapists support LGBTQ+ couples and partners in non-traditional and consensually non-monogamous relationships, with the same care and respect we bring to every couple across the Bay Area.
