EFT Couples Therapy

EFT for couples might be a good fit if any of this sounds like you

Most couples who come in are not bad at love. They are stuck in a cycle, one that pulls them apart even when what they both want is to feel close. EFT, or Emotionally Focused Therapy, is a research-supported approach that looks underneath the conflict to the fear, hurt, and longing driving it. It tends to be a strong fit when you are tired of the same fights and want something deeper than surface-level fixes.

Z

You keep having the same argument, in different clothes, over and over.

Z
One of you pushes to be heard while the other shuts down or pulls away.
Z
You care about each other but feel more like roommates than partners.
Z
Trust has been shaken, by betrayal, secrecy, or distance, and you want real repair.
Z
A transition, new baby, blended family, illness, grief, career stress, has strained things.
Z
You want genuine emotional connection, not just better communication scripts.
If any of this sounds like your relationship, EFT may be worth exploring. You do not have to arrive knowing how to fix things. Understanding the cycle together is where the work begins.

How EFT can help

Emotionally Focused Therapy centers on the emotional bond between partners. Instead of debating who is right, EFT helps you see what is happening beneath the conflict, which is usually fear, hurt, loneliness, or the longing to feel chosen and understood. Many couples tell us EFT finally helps them name what has really been going on underneath, feelings that were hard to reach or share before.

Many couples come in saying they just need to communicate better. Communication matters, but EFT looks at why it breaks down in the first place. Often one partner pursues, criticizes, or escalates to feel heard, while the other withdraws or gets defensive to avoid conflict, and both end up feeling lonely and misunderstood. In EFT, we slow that pattern down and help you build a new one, where emotions are expressed more clearly, conflict feels safer, and repair comes more naturally.

What EFT for couples can help with

EFT is especially helpful across a range of the struggles that bring couples in. Wherever you are, the goal is the same: to help you feel safe, understood, and connected again.

Z

Communication and recurring conflict: You feel stuck in repetitive arguments or tension that never fully resolves.

Z
Trust repair after betrayal: After infidelity, secrecy, or broken trust, EFT offers a structured, compassionate path toward repair.
Z
Emotional disconnection: You care about each other but feel distant, numb, or more like roommates than partners.
Z
Intimacy concerns: As emotional safety grows, physical and emotional closeness often return with it.
Z
Parenting stress and life transitions: New parenthood, blended families, illness, grief, and career stress can strain even strong relationships.

What to expect from our therapists

While every couple’s journey is their own, EFT generally moves through three phases:

Z

Phase 1, understanding the pattern: We identify the negative cycle and name it as the problem, rather than blaming either of you.

Z

Phase 2, creating new emotional experiences: You learn to share vulnerable feelings and respond to each other in new, safer ways.

Z

Phase 3, strengthening connection and repair: We help you build lasting tools for closeness, repair, and resilience.

EFT is structured, supportive, and emotionally attuned, and it never turns sessions into a place of criticism or taking sides.

What our clients say

“We came in stuck in the same fight we’d had for years. For the first time, we could see the cycle instead of blaming each other. That changed everything.”

“After the trust between us was broken, I didn’t think repair was possible. It was slow, but our therapist gave us a way through that felt safe for both of us.”

“We did sessions online because of our schedules with the baby. It still felt close and real, and we finally stopped feeling like roommates.”

EFT couples therapy in person near you and online

In-person and online sessions are both full ways to do this work, not lesser versions of each other. Many couples find online sessions easier to coordinate around busy lives, while others value being in the room together. You can choose what fits you.

Online couples therapy works throughout California, and for many couples it is what makes consistent sessions possible, around work, kids, and life. Doing the work from your own home can also make it easier to carry what you practice in session into the spaces where your relationship actually lives.

Common questions about EFT couples therapy

What is Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples?
EFT is a research-supported approach that focuses on the emotional bond between partners. Rather than sorting out who is right, it helps you understand the fear, hurt, or longing underneath your conflicts, and use that understanding to rebuild trust and closeness. Many couples in San Jose and Santa Clara come to us specifically for this kind of depth.
How long does EFT couples therapy take?
Some couples notice meaningful shifts within the first few months, especially with consistent sessions. Longer-standing patterns or deeper trust injuries can take more time. You and your therapist set goals and pacing together.
Do you teach communication skills?
Yes, EFT includes practical tools for communication and repair. The difference is that we ground those tools in emotional safety first, which is what makes them actually work outside of session rather than falling apart in the heat of the moment.
What if only one of us is motivated?
That is very common, and it is not a dealbreaker. EFT works to reduce blame and defensiveness, which often softens a reluctant partner and builds hope over time. You are welcome to start the conversation even if you are not both sure yet.
Do you accept insurance?
We accept several insurance plans and are happy to walk through coverage and options during your free consultation, so the cost is clear before you begin. Note that coverage for couples therapy can work differently from individual therapy, and we can help you understand your specific benefits.
Is EFT right for every couple?
EFT helps a wide range of couples, including long-term partners, premarital couples, and couples in crisis. It is not appropriate when there is ongoing abuse, coercive control, or intimidation. In those situations, safety and stabilization come first, and we can help you find appropriate resources.
