Family Therapy
When things feel hard at home
Families go through stretches where the tension sits at the dinner table, where the same conflicts keep flaring, or where everyone loves each other and still can’t seem to connect. Family therapy is a place to slow down and understand what’s happening between you, with someone in the room who isn’t taking any one person’s side. Our therapists work with families in person in San Jose, Santa Clara, Fremont, Oakland, and Morgan Hill, and online throughout California.
Does any of this sound familiar?
Families come to therapy at all kinds of moments. Some are in real pain, worn down by conflict that won’t let up. Others are basically solid and want help through a hard season, a tough transition, or one relationship that’s gotten strained. You don’t have to be in crisis to deserve support. These experiences are common:
The same conflicts keep cycling, and no one knows how to break the pattern
A big change: a divorce, a move, a new baby,or a loss, has thrown everyone off balance
Blending two families is harder than anyone expected
Adult family members dealing with conflict or disconnection needing a space to heal past wounds and move forward.
Reaching out, even when only one person is ready to start, is a sign you’re not giving up on each other.
How family therapy can help
Struggling as a family doesn’t mean anyone has failed or that you’re doing it wrong. Most of us were never taught how to handle conflict, repair after a hard moment, or stay connected through stress, and families carry a lot of it. Family therapy gives you a place to work on those things together, with a therapist who helps you see the patterns you fall into and what each person needs underneath them.
Our therapists tailor the work to your family rather than running you through a script. Sometimes that means the whole family in the room, sometimes a parent and child, sometimes shifting who attends as the work evolves. Depending on what you bring, the work may draw on somatic approaches for the stress bodies hold, mindfulness based methods for staying present in heated moments, CBT for a family member carrying anxiety or depression, and trauma when someone is working through trauma that affects the whole system. When the strain centers on the couple or co-parenting relationship, we can fold in approaches from our couples therapy work too.

What some clients say
We came in because our house had become all tension and slammed doors. We didn’t fix everything overnight, but we finally understood what was driving it, and home feels livable again.
“Blending our two families was so much harder than we imagined. Having someone help all of us figure out how to actually be one household, without forcing it, was the thing that turned it around.”
Getting everyone in one place felt impossible until we tried sessions online. My siblings and I actually managed to keep it going. It worked better than I expected.

Common questions about adult therapy
Does the whole family have to come to every session?
No. Family therapy is flexible. Sometimes the whole family is in the room, sometimes it’s a parent and a child, sometimes the makeup shifts as the work evolves. Your therapist will help you all figure out who needs to be there for what, and that often changes over time. Our San Jose, Santa Clara, and other bay area therapists adjust the structure to fit your family.
What if one family member refuses to come?
That happens, and it doesn’t mean therapy can’t help. Sometimes the work starts with whoever is willing, and others join later once it feels less threatening. Even shifts in one or two people can change the whole dynamic at home. A free consultation is a good place to talk through where things stand.
Can family therapy help with my teenager?
Yes. A lot of families come to us specifically about a teen who’s pulled away, shut down, or started struggling. Family therapy can help you understand what’s underneath it and rebuild the connection, often alongside individual support for the teen. We work with this a lot, across the Bay Area.
What does a family session actually look like?
Usually the therapist helps you slow down the conversations that tend to go sideways at home, so you can see the pattern, understand what’s driving it, and practice new ways of talking and repairing. It’s active and collaborative, not just everyone taking turns venting. The goal is change you can feel at home, not just in the room.
