Grief and loss therapy
There’s no right way to grieve
Does any of this sound familiar?
Grief doesn’t always look the way people expect. It isn’t only tears and funerals. Sometimes it’s numbness, or exhaustion, or a strange flatness where you thought you’d feel more. Sometimes it shows up long after everyone else has moved on.
You might recognize yourself in some of these:
The waves still hit you out of nowhere, even after a long time.
You feel like you’re supposed to be “over it” by now.
You’re holding it together for everyone else and have nowhere to put your own grief.
The loss wasn’t a death, and you’re not sure you’re “allowed” to grieve it.
You feel guilty, relieved, angry, or numb, and it confuses you.
Other people have stopped asking how you’re doing.
However your grief looks, it makes sense, and you deserve some real support.
How grief therapy can help
Grief is not a problem to be solved or a timeline to get through. It’s the natural response to losing something you cared about, and there’s no correct way to do it. Therapy doesn’t rush you past your grief or ask you to “let go.” It gives you a place to feel what you feel, make sense of it, and slowly find a way to carry the loss that lets you keep living.
Our therapists draw on approaches with strong evidence behind them, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for the thoughts that get stuck and heavy, somatic therapy for the grief your body holds, and mindfulness based methods for staying present when emotions feel overwhelming. When a loss is sudden, traumatic, or tangled with painful memories, EMDR can help, too. Your therapist meets you where you are rather than handing you a one-size-fits-all plan.
What therapy can help you do
Anxiety isn’t a character flaw or a sign that something is permanently broken in you. It’s your nervous system trying to protect you, and it’s learned some patterns that are no longer serving you. Therapy gives you a space to understand those patterns and start changing them in ways that actually stick.
Our therapists draw on approaches that are grounded in research and adapted to who you are.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps you identify and shift the thought patterns fueling your anxiety.
Somatic therapy works with the physical experience of anxiety in your body, not just your mind.
For anxiety rooted in past experiences, EMDR can help you process what’s underneath without having to relive it in detail.
We also weave in mindfulness and nervous system regulation tools that you can use in your real life, between sessions.
What changes with the right support:
Make space for your grief instead of pushing it down.
Move through guilt, anger, or relief without judgment.
Stay connected to who or what you lost while still moving forward.
Find footing in daily life again, at your own pace.
Carry the loss in a way that leaves room for living.

Common questions about grief therapy
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
There’s no threshold you have to cross. If your grief is making it hard to function, feels stuck, or you just want support carrying it, that’s reason enough. You don’t need a diagnosis to reach out. Our therapists in San Jose and across the Bay Area can help you figure out what would feel supportive.
What does grief therapy actually look like?
Your first session is a conversation, not an evaluation. Your therapist will ask about your loss, how you’re coping, and what you’re hoping for. From there, sessions move at your pace, drawing on approaches like CBT, somatic therapy, or mindfulness depending on what helps you most.
Isn't grief something I should be able to get through on my own?
Plenty of people move through loss with the support of family and friends, and that’s real. But grief can also get heavy, lonely, or stuck, and there’s nothing weak about wanting a place to process it. Therapy isn’t a sign you’re failing at grief. It’s just support.
Can therapy help with a loss that wasn't a death?
Yes. Grief comes with all kinds of loss, including divorce, estrangement, miscarriage, a serious diagnosis, or the life you thought you’d have. If it mattered to you, it’s worth grieving, and our Fremont and Morgan Hill therapists work with loss of many kinds.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes. Therapy for Every Body is in-network with Cigna and Aetna at all of our locations in San Jose, Santa Clara, Fremont, Oakland, and Morgan Hill. If you have a different plan, we can provide documentation for out-of-network reimbursement.
Can I do sessions online?
Yes. Telehealth sessions work exactly the same as in-person and are available to anyone in California. Many clients start online during the hardest stretches, when leaving home feels like too much.
You can hold the loss and still move forward
It can be hard to imagine feeling any lighter while you’re in the thick of it, which is exactly why you don’t have to imagine it yet. The first step is just a conversation.
