Online Therapy

Online Therapy Across California

Therapy that fits your life shouldn’t depend on your commute. Every therapist on our team is available for online sessions throughout California, so whether you’re in the Bay Area or anywhere else in the state, you can connect with a compassionate, skilled therapist from wherever you feel most comfortable.

For many people, meeting from home isn’t a compromise. It’s the thing that finally makes therapy possible. No traffic, no waiting room, no rearranging your whole day. Just you, in a space that’s already yours, with a therapist who’s fully present on the other side of the screen. We use secure, HIPAA-compliant video so your sessions stay private and confidential.

We offer online sessions throughout California, as well as in-person care at our offices in San Jose, Santa Clara, Fremont, Oakland, and Morgan Hill.

The research is clear that online therapy works just as well as in-person care for most concerns, and many clients find they open up more easily from the comfort of home.

Who Online Therapy is good for

Online therapy is a particularly good fit when:

Z

You live somewhere without an affirming or specialized therapist nearby

Z

A busy schedule, long commute, or childcare make getting to an office hard

Z

A chronic illness, disability, or mobility concern makes travel draining

Z

You feel more comfortable and open in your own space

Z

You want to keep care consistent through travel, a move, or a hectic season

Z

Coordinating a couple or family across different schedules is easier from home

Some people use telehealth occasionally, while others choose it as their primary way to meet. If you have access to a quiet, private space, it can be just as personal and effective as being in the room together. It isn’t the right fit for everyone or every moment, and that’s okay. During your free consultation we can talk honestly about whether online, in person, or a mix of both makes the most sense for you.

Setting Up for a Good Online Session

A few small things make online therapy feel smoother and more connected. None of this has to be perfect. It’s just about creating a space where you can settle in and focus.

Before your session

Z

Sessions are held through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform designed to protect your privacy.

Z

Log in about five minutes early so everything is ready to go. Your clinician will join at the scheduled appointment time.

Z

Use the strongest internet connection available. Video uses more bandwidth than most everyday browsing, so a reliable signal helps the session stay steady.

Z

You can join from a computer or smartphone with a camera and sound. You may be asked to download a secure app the first time you connect.

Setting up your space

Z

Choose a quiet, private location where you’re unlikely to be interrupted.

Z

Place your laptop or phone on a stable surface rather than holding it or resting it on your knees.

Z

Position your camera so your face is clearly visible near the top of the screen.

Z

Sit with windows or lamps in front of you rather than behind you. Light coming from behind turns your face into a shadow, while light in front helps your therapist see and connect with you.

Z

If others are home, a closed door or background music outside the room can help support privacy.

Z

Have a glass of water and anything that helps you feel grounded nearby, a blanket, a cup of tea, a fidget, a pet. Your space gets to be yours.

If more than one person is joining

Z

When several people are on the call, please turn off virtual backgrounds. They often don’t work well with more than one participant and can interfere with everyone being clearly visible.

If you hit a connection issue

Z

If your clinician doesn’t appear right at the start time, send a quick text. They’ll do the same if needed.

Z

If the call drops for any reason, return to the virtual waiting room and your clinician will reconnect with you there.

A Note on Safety and California Residency

Because of licensing rules, you’ll need to be physically located in California during your sessions, and your therapist will confirm your location at the start of each one. Your therapist also won’t be able to meet unless you’re in a safe, private spot. If you’re joining from your car, it needs to be securely parked, and you’ll still provide your location.

When you begin, we’ll set up an emergency contact together, just as a precaution, since your therapist isn’t able to provide emergency services remotely. If something ever falls outside what online care can safely hold, we’ll help you find the right level of support.

What to Expect

Getting started is simple. We’ll set up a free 15-minute consultation so you can get a feel for our practice and ask any questions. From there, your therapist will send a secure video link, and you’ll meet at the same link each session. There’s no special software to wrestle with and no commitment before you’re ready.

You don’t have to have it all figured out before you reach out. That’s what the first conversation is for.

Common questions about adult therapy

Does online therapy actually work as well as in person?
For most concerns, yes. Research consistently finds online therapy as effective as meeting in the room, and many clients tell us they open up more easily from the comfort of their own space. Some things, like certain kinds of play therapy with young children, can work better in person, and we’re always glad to talk through what fits you best.
Is it private and secure?
Yes. All of our online sessions are held on a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform built to protect your privacy and keep your sessions confidential. We’ll also help you think through setting up a private space on your end so you can speak freely.
Do you take insurance for online sessions?
We accept Cigna and Aetna for online therapy, the same as we do for in-person care, and our team is happy to help you check your benefits before you start. If we’re not in network with your plan, we can talk through your options during your free consultation.
Do I have to live in the Bay Area?
No. Every therapist on our team is available online throughout California, so you can work with us from anywhere in the state. Because of licensing rules, you do need to be physically located in California during your sessions, and your therapist will confirm your location at the start of each one.
What do I actually need to join a session?
Just a private space, a reliable internet connection, and a computer or smartphone with a camera and sound. You may be asked to download a secure app the first time you connect. Logging in about five minutes early gives everything time to load so you can settle in.
Can couples and families do therapy online too?
Absolutely. Online therapy works well for couples and families, and it often makes scheduling far easier when everyone has different commitments. When more than one person is on the call, we’ll ask you to turn off virtual backgrounds, since they tend to glitch with multiple people and can get in the way of seeing each other clearly.

Are you ready to create positive, lasting change?

We’re here to support and explore with you, wherever you are in California.
