Somatic Therapy

Sometimes the Body Holds What Words Can’t Reach

Stress, anxiety, and old hurts do not just live in your thoughts. They settle into your body, as tension you cannot shake, a nervous system stuck on high alert, or a sense of disconnection from yourself. Somatic therapy works with that, gently, so healing can happen in the body and not only the mind. At Therapy for Every Body, our somatic therapists work with you in San Jose, Santa Clara, Fremont, Oakland, and Morgan Hill, and through telehealth across California.

Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy might be a good fit if any of this sounds like you

Somatic therapy starts from a simple truth: the body and mind are not separate. What we feel emotionally shows up physically, and what the body holds shapes how we feel. This approach pays attention to sensation, breath, and the nervous system alongside talk. It tends to be a strong fit when something feels stuck in a way that thinking and talking alone have not reached.

Z

You feel stress or anxiety in your body, tension, tightness, or a racing system that will not settle.

Z
You have talked through your struggles but still feel them physically.
Z
You feel disconnected from your body, or numb, or like you are watching from a distance.
Z
Old experiences seem to live in your body more than in your words.
Z
Your nervous system feels stuck on high alert, or shut down, more often than you would like.
Z
You are curious about an approach that includes the body, not only the mind.
If any of this resonates, somatic therapy may be worth exploring. You do not need to already understand what your body is holding. Learning to listen to it is part of the work.

How somatic therapy can help

When we are stressed or overwhelmed, the body responds, tensing, bracing, speeding up, or shutting down. Those responses are meant to protect us, but they can get stuck and keep running long after the moment has passed. Somatic therapy helps your nervous system find its way back to safety, working with sensation and the body’s own signals so that stress and old hurts can finally move through and settle.

This is not about pushing or forcing anything. Our therapists move at a pace that feels safe, helping you notice and gently work with what your body is holding. Somatic work is especially helpful for stress and trauma that live in the body, and our therapists weave in related approaches when it helps, including EMDR when past experiences carry a charge, CBT for the thoughts and patterns tied to how you feel, and mindfulness based methods that deepen the connection to your body. The work is shaped around you.

What our clients say

“I had talked about my anxiety for years, but my body never got the memo. Somatic work was the first thing that actually helped my system settle.”

“My therapist never rushed me. We worked slowly with what I was feeling in my body, and things I had carried for a long time finally started to loosen.”

“I wasn’t sure body-based work would translate online, but it did. My therapist guided me through it from my own space and I felt safe the whole time.”

Common questions about somatic therapy

What does somatic therapy actually look like?
Alongside talking, your therapist helps you notice what is happening in your body, sensations, tension, breath, and gently works with it. That might mean pausing to track a feeling, grounding exercises, or small movements. It is collaborative and paced to you, never forced. Many people in San Jose and Santa Clara are drawn to it because talk alone has not reached what they are carrying.
What is somatic therapy used for?
It is especially helpful for stress, anxiety, and trauma that live in the body, and for feeling disconnected or stuck. You do not need a particular diagnosis to benefit. If you sense that your struggles show up physically, somatic work may be a good fit.
Do I have to talk about everything that happened?
No. Somatic therapy works with your body’s responses in the present, so it can help even when you are not ready to put words to everything, or cannot. Your therapist follows your pace and never pushes you past what feels safe.
How is somatic therapy different from regular talk therapy?
Traditional talk therapy works mainly through thoughts and words. Somatic therapy adds the body, paying attention to sensation and the nervous system, because some of what we hold is stored physically and responds best to a body-based approach. Many of our therapists blend the two.
Do you accept insurance?
We accept several insurance plans and are happy to walk through coverage and options during your free consultation, so the cost is clear before you begin.
Can I do somatic therapy online?
Yes. We offer telehealth throughout California, and somatic work translates well to video. For many people, being in their own safe space supports the work, since feeling settled is part of how the body heals.
